At Endodontic Excellence, we understand that some patients are hesitant about dental X-rays or CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) scans.

We want you to know that today’s imaging technology is extremely safe, uses very low radiation, and can dramatically improve your treatment outcome.

Why Imaging Matters

Dental imaging allows us to:

  1. Diagnose hidden problems early
  2. Accurately plan and complete root canal treatments
  3. Avoid retreatments, extractions, and costly future procedures
  4. Save your natural tooth whenever possible

The small amount of radiation involved can actually prevent bigger issues and help you avoid more invasive treatments later on.

Traditional X-rays vs. CBCT Scans

While traditional X-rays and panoramic images provide helpful information, they are limited to two-dimensional views and may miss subtle infections, hidden canals, or fine root fractures.

CBCT scans, on the other hand, provide three-dimensional images of your teeth, bone, and nerve canals giving your endodontist a complete, detailed view before treatment even begins.

The benefits of CBCT include:

  • Fewer X-rays needed overall
  • Sharper, more accurate diagnostics
  • Early detection of problems that could otherwise be missed
  • Safe, predictable treatment planning

How Much Radiation Is Involved?

Thanks to major technological advancements, today’s dental imaging emits over 95% less radiation than older machines.

To put things into perspective:

  1. A dental X-ray = ~5–6 μSv, about the same as 1 day of natural background radiation
  2. A CBCT scan = ~16 μSv, equal to 3.5 days of natural background radiation or about the same exposure as eating two bananas
  3. A coast-to-coast flight = ~80 μSv

Our J. Morita CBCT and panoramic equipment are specifically designed to minimize radiation exposure.

“Morita’s diagnostic equipment is designed to make patient dose as low as reasonably achievable. The radiation level of Morita Digital Panoramic X-ray equipment for one panoramic shot is about half the cosmic radiation you’d be exposed to on a flight from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles.”

This means you’re exposed to more radiation flying in a plane than you are getting from a single scan at our office.

What About Radiation Protection?

According to the Journal of the American Dental Association:

“Advances in technology have reduced radiation by over 95%, and routine protective shielding is no longer required for intraoral, panoramic, cephalometric, and CBCT imaging.”

That said, we are always happy to provide shielding upon request, especially if it gives you peace of mind. Your comfort matters to us.
