Not all tooth stains are on the outside; internal discoloration requires a different kind of solution. Unlike traditional whitening, which targets stains on the outside of your teeth, internal bleaching lightens the tooth from the inside, safely restoring an even color to your smile.
Why Do Teeth Turn Dark
When a tooth experiences trauma, infection, or a root canal, small traces of blood or debris can become trapped inside the tooth. Over time, these pigments can cause the tooth to darken to a gray, brown, or yellow shade, often affecting just one tooth, even if it feels completely fine.
How Internal Bleaching Works
Internal bleaching is a quick and gentle procedure performed by your endodontist after root canal treatment.
Here’s how:
- We carefully access the inside of the tooth where the dark discoloration lives.
- A safe whitening agent is placed inside the tooth.
- The tooth is sealed with a temporary filling, allowing the whitening agent to work.
- After a week, you’ll return to have the material removed, and we’ll refer you back to your general dentist to complete the final restoration.
Depending on how dark the tooth is, 1–2 rounds may be recommended for the best results.
Before & After Results
Many of our patients are amazed at how quickly their smile improves.
Internal bleaching may be right for you if:
- You’ve had a root canal and notice a tooth darkening
- One tooth looks different in color from your other teeth
- Your general dentist recommends it for cosmetic reasons
- You’re not ready to commit to a crown or veneer just yet
At Endodontic Excellence, we care about saving your tooth and helping you feel confident when you smile. That’s why we offer internal bleaching as part of our root canal treatment, or as a stand-alone cosmetic solution when appropriate. We’re always happy to consult with you and your general dentist to determine if it’s the right next step.
